Layovers- How many of us love ’em? No one I suppose. Fortunately, Evidence, of Dilated Peoples fame’s latest EP (released Nov. 08), The Layover proves otherwise and would suggest that layovers could be in fact gratifying.

Nas said it best when he alleged, “association breads similarity…” ; in no way is this more evident than with the crop of producers and emcees that have been assembled- for lack of better words- the allure that is The Layover. Like his debut, The Weatherman, this project fuses banging beats from a who’s who of producers including himself, StepBrother The Alchemist, Khrysis, Sid Roams and DJ Babu with not only the sincere lyricism that has come to be associated with Mr. Slow Flow but also worthy guest features from the likes of Elzhi, Phonte and Blu to name a few. The result is a balanced composition of meditative rhyming fortified by well devised instrumentals.



Clearly a precursor to his sophomore LP Cats & Dogs, this EP serves its purpose as its title, The Layover would suggest- it’s a short break between albums imposed by EV’s creative process sans the dullness.

The Sound That Changed America: Motown Celebrates Its 50th Anniversary

As an irresistible force of social and cultural change, Berry Gordy's legendary Motown Records made its mark not just on the music industry, but society at large, with a sound that that has become one of the most significant musical accomplishments and stunning success stories of the 20th century. Diana Ross & the Supremes, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, Stevie Wonder, the Temptations, the Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson & the Jackson 5, Lionel Richie & the Commodores, the Marvelettes, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, Gladys Knight & the Pips, their music communicated and brought together a racially divided country and segregated society, around the world, touching all people of all ages and race. No other record company in history has exerted such an enormous influence on both the style and substance of popular music and culture. With more than 180 No. 1 hit songs worldwide and counting, that influence is still being felt today, from pop to hip-hop, Motown celebrates the 50th anniversary of the company's founding.

Motown, of course, stands for more than just the historic music. The label and its remarkable legacy is a reflection of the hard work of dedicated individuals overcoming incredible obstacles to achieve great success. Nearly a half-century ago, on January 12, 1959, to be exact, a young African-American songwriter named Berry Gordy founded Tamla Records with a loan of $800 from his family, marking the birth of the "Motown Records Corporation." A man of vision, drive, talent and determination, Berry Gordy was also a producer, innovative entrepreneur, and teacher. The phenomenal success of Motown Records is a tribute to all that he embodies and all the talent that he brought out in others. Under his leadership, and through determination and support of the Motown family of artists, Gordy forged new grounds for minorities and made the "Motown Sound" a worldwide phenomenon beloved by millions.

Berry Gordy always learned from all his experiences and applied them to his business. He put the tedious time he spent working on the assembly line at Detroit's Lincoln-Mercury automobile plant to good use: "Every day I watched how a bare metal frame, rolling down the line would come off the other end, a spanking brand new car. What a great idea! Maybe, I could do the same thing with my music. Create a place where a kid off the street could walk in one door, an unknown, go through a process, and come out another door, a star." That little thought that came to him while running up and down that assembly line became a reality we now know as "Motown."

When Motown was housed in its famed "Hitsville U.S.A." offices at 2648 West Grand Boulevard in Detroit, it was not just a location; history would be made there. In fact, Berry Gordy created a twenty-four hour hit-making and artist development factory, nurturing the artistic talent of the singers, writers, producers, as well as, corporate executives. Today, Motown is not only the greatest pop music hit factory ever heard, but an institution, a state of mind, a way of life, a style, the "Sound of Young America." The distinctive, upbeat and uplifting music brought together pop and soul, white and black, old and young, like never before and continues to this day. Regardless of race or social background, teenage girls admired Diana Ross and teenage boys pretended to be Smokey Robinson. Motown became the heartbeat of American pop music. With multi-platinum artists ranging from the Miracles, Temptations, Four Tops and Supremes to Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and Jackson 5, the House That Gordy Built had and has no rival. Motown defined the term "crossover" not only on record and stage, but also behind the scenes. After breaking down barriers and having pop radio embrace Motown artists, Berry Gordy set his sights on television. He booked his artists on popular shows such as American Bandstand and the Ed Sullivan Show, making history as the first African-American artists on these shows. After captivating national audiences with repeat performances on The Ed Sullivan Show, The Supremes were the first R&B act to play the country's most prestigious night club, New York's Copacabana, which paved the way for other R&B acts into the top cabaret circuits around the world.

Motown was the first African-American-owned record label to reach widespread national acclaim, Motown broke down racial prejudice by becoming the most successful independent record company in history and the most successful African-American owned business in America.

After Gordy purchased that first Detroit property, he converted the garage into a small recording studio and the kitchen into the control room. The company's first signing was the Miracles, led by Smokey Robinson, and its first release was Marv Johnson's "Come to Me," January 21, 1959. But its first major hit was Barrett Strong's "Money (That's What I Want)," a song co-written by Gordy himself, which reached #2 on Billboard's R&B chart in 1960. A year later, the Miracles would score the company's first million seller with "Shop Around." That same year, teen girl group the Marvelettes landed the company's first pop No. 1, "Please Mr. Postman," while the label signed two young groups, the Supremes and the Temptations. Within three years, those two groups would lead Motown into the mainstream, when the Supremes launched an unprecedented string of five consecutive No. 1 hits, starting with "Where Did Our Love Go," while the Temptations released the eternal Motown classic, "My Girl." In 1968 the company had five records out of the Top 10 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart and accomplished another unprecedented feat by seizing the top three spots for a full month.

Upon his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988, Motown's founder was given the following tribute: "Gordy endeavored to reach across the racial divide with music that could touch all people, regardless of the color of their skin. Under his tutelage, Motown became a model of black capitalism, pride and self-expression and a repository for some of the greatest talent ever assembled at one company… Motown's stable of singers, songwriters, producers and musicians took the concept of simple, catchy pop songs to a whole new level of sophistication and, thanks to the music's roots in gospel and blues, visceral intensity… After Motown, black popular music would never again be dismissed as a minority taste… Aesthetically no less than commercially, Motown's achievements will likely remain unrivaled and untoppable."

Today, the label is part of the Universal Music Group, with its classic recorded music catalog managed by Universal Music Enterprises (UMe). The timeless songs from Motown between 1959 and 1985 are represented by EMI Music Publishing.

From late 2008 to the end of 2009, Universal Music Group and EMI Music Publishing will mark the historic Detroit label's musical achievements with a series of initiatives. Notably, Universal Music Enterprises will issue monthly music releases in both physical and digital formats, with bonus tracks enhancing these packages. Details will be announced as each new package approaches.

Also upcoming throughout the celebration are releases of classic Motown Television specials in a series of DVD collections and INSIDE MOTOWN, a multi-part documentary on how the company was built.

ISLAND DEF JAM MUSIC GROUP FORMS STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP WITH AUTHOR TINA WELLS TO LAUNCH MACKENZIE BLUE!

Tweens everywhere will discover a new heroine this spring with the May 5th appearance of Mackenzie Blue, the first in the series of HarperCollins Children’s Books about the many adventures of seventh-grader and aspiring pop star Mackenzie Blue.

Island Def Jam Music Group and author Tina Wells have formed a strategic partnership to launch a major talent search and discover the REAL Mackenzie Blue, it was announced today by Antonio ‘L.A.’ Reid, Chairman, Island Def Jam Music Group. This forward-looking ‘360’ arrangement will bring the fictional Mackenzie Blue to life as the leader of her own recording and touring pop band. DrJays.com Announces National Model Search - Fresh Faces Of Spring 2009!

Pioneering DJ Launches HistoryOfMixtapes.com, Prepares New Book

In preparation for his forthcoming literary debut, For Promotional Use Only…The History of Mixtapes, DJ Mars is proud to announce the launch of a new website celebrating the history of all things Hip-Hop. www.HistoryOfMixtapes.com brings a new element to the web, a wealth of resources for fans of the genre seeking nostalgia, education or both. The site, which went live in November 2008, also serves as a promotional tool for the new book, which Mars expects to release independently in late Fall 2009.

In creating the site, DJ Mars has meticulously combed his personal collection of mixtapes and memories to bring together rare footage, sound and information that captures the energy of Hip-Hop culture exuded in the early 90s, as it was beginning to show its influence on pop culture. The Ultimate Peter Tosh Experience In Stores Feb 24th

Along with Bob Marley and Bunny Wailer, Peter Tosh formed The Wailers-Jamaica's equivalent of The Beatles-and when that super-group splintered in the early Seventies all three Wailers went on to achieve worldwide fame with acclaimed solo careers. Peter Tosh was a bonafide international star with such anthems as "Get Up Stand Up", "Legalize It" and "Equal Rights" but he was also a significant political activist who was arrested in anti-apartheid protest, invited to address the United Nations, and who wore Arab garb when performing in solidarity with the Palestinian liberation movement. Truly he stands with such artists as Curtis Mayfield, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, Gil Scott-Heron and Bob Marley as one of a small group of musical artists who had major political impact. Yet, while Bob Marley's birthday is celebrated annually around the world, there is relatively little commemoration of Peter Tosh. Interestingly, Peter's last concert occurred in 1983, just over two years after Bob Marley's death. Tosh was met by his own untimely death in 1987 when he was murdered in Jamaica in 1987 at the age of 44, shortly after the release of his No Nuclear War album and on the eve of what was touted to be the longest reggae tour ever undertaken. Peter Tosh's murder was validation of his long-time assertion that there were many people who wanted him dead.


The Ultimate Peter Tosh Experience multi-pac, which will be released by Shanachie in January 2009, is a two-DVD, one CD, "multi-pac" with a thirty page booklet of commentary and rare photos that gives the first truly comprehensive look at Peter Tosh as a brilliant musical artist, significant political figure and charismatic and brave, though often misunderstood, human being. This dynamic set offers a stunning multi-media experience and delivers some of Peter Tosh's most important work as well as rare material as follows:

--The audio CD presents fifteen outstanding Peter Tosh recordings including such classics as "Get Up Stand Up," "Rastafari Is" and "Downpressor Man" as well as such rare or previously unreleased recordings as "Watcha Gonna Do" (with Eric Clapton) from 1974, recorded in Jamaica in the wake of Eric's success with "I Shot The Sheriff," a previously unreleased version of Peter's signature tune "Legalize It," "Babylon Queendom," the early single "Arise Black Man," as well as the released studio version of "Wanted Dread And Alive" in addition to the previous unreleased Geoffrey Chung mix of the classic.


The first DVD presents the entire acclaimed documentary film Stepping Razor: Red X, which weaves interviews, performance footage and commentary in an atmospheric non-linear presentation leading up to the mystery of Peter's murder, evoking the supernatural element that Peter felt was very much a part of his life.

The second DVD brings together a selection of concert footage, including rare footage from the historic One Love Peace Concert in 1979, the No Nukes concert (where Peter was the only reggae performer) in 1981, Reggae Sunsplash II from 1979 and Reggae Super Jam in 1982. Also included is footage from Peter Tosh's concert at The Roxy in Los Angeles in 1983 and previously unreleased interview footage of Peter with noted reggae historian Roger Steffens from 1979 and 1981.


The thirty-page booklet includes essays about Peter from three people who knew him: Herbie Miller, who was Peter's personal manager from 1975 -1981, reveals the mystical aspect of Peter's persona; reggae authority Roger Steffens, whose friendship with Peter lasted from 1979 until Peter's death, draws on reminiscences by Bunny Wailer to give a look a very personalized look at Peter; and Shanachie Entertainment's General manager Randall Grass who first encountered Peter in 1979 as a music journalist and radio show host, gives an overview of Peter's life rooted in his interviews of Peter. Included also are a selection of rare photos by celebrated photographer Adrian Boot, whose photographs of Bob Marley and other reggae artists have been published worldwide.

Peter Tosh was born in Westmoreland parish, Jamaica on October 19, 1944. With an affinity for music virtually from birth, Peter sang in his local church choir, played piano, and taught himself to play guitar. He was raised by his aunt, having no contact with his father and little contact with his mother. By age fifteen he had moved to Kingston and, in the Trenchtown ghetto where he settled, met other musically-inclined youths such as Bob Marley and Bunny Wailer, with whom he formed The Wailers in 1964. With such hits as "Simmer Down" and "It Hurts To Be Alone," The Wailers rapidly became the most popular vocal group on the island in the ska era. Though their success ebbed and flowed throughout the Sixties into the early Seventies, they made numerous outstanding recordings in the ska, rocksteady and reggae eras. The international breakthrough came when Island Records' Chris Blackwell signed them in 1972 and bankrolled their debut album Catch A Fire, the first true reggae album in the singles' dominated genre. All three Wailers sang lead and harmony vocals, wrote songs and played instruments. Though sales were not initially large, The Wailers began to tour internationally and their follow-up album, Burnin' garnered critical acclaim. Peter, who had been chafing at Island's promotion of Bob Marley as front person of the group, As a result Peter decided to launch his solo career, as Bunny Wailer had done shortly before.

Peter Tosh's debut album" Legalize It" garnered instant world-wide notoriety on release in 1976; the title track, which argued that marijuana should be legal, was banned as a single in Jamaica. Peter's second album, Equal Rights, is a reggae classic was inspirational to liberation movements in Southern Africa, where it was banned. It included the anthem "Get Up Stand Up," as well as uncompromising songs arguing against apartheid and for a pan-African identity. At the One Love Peace Concert in Kingston in 1979, a concert ostensibly intended to bring warring political and gang factions together, Peter delivered an impassioned and accusatory diatribe directly to Prime Minister Michael Manley and Opposition leader Edward Seaga sitting in the audience. Peter was badly beaten by police within months of the incident. Mick Jagger happened to be in the audience and was moved to sign Peter to Rolling Stones Records, which afforded Peter a highly visible platform via the albums Bush Doctor, Mystic Man, and Wanted Dread And Alive, as well as widespread international touring. He was then signed to EMI Records directly, releasing Mama Africa, highlighted by Peter's unique interpretation of the rock 'n' roll anthem "Johnny B. Goode"; during this period Peter began using a guitar shaped like an AK-47 in concert. There followed a less active period as Peter recuperated physically and spiritually from the effects of beatings he had received as well as the pressure of being a target. The recording of the No Nuclear War album and planning of an extensive world-wide tour signaled his re-emergence. On the eve of the tour however, a former convict who Peter had been helping by providing shelter and money, confronted Peter, his common-life wife Marlene, and a number of compatriots at Peter's house, with armed accomplices, demanding money. When Peter said he had no money there, they opened fire, killing Peter and others, with many wounded. Some speculated that it was an organized hit of the man who never back down, even in the face of armed authorities.

"I know I'm wanted because of the evil forces," Peter once mused. "But still I know there is another counter-force that counteract any evil force the forces of righteousness is a billion times more powerful. I fear no evil'cause Jah is with I."

Multiple award-winning artist Smokie Norful will release SMOKIE NORFUL LIVE, his fourth CD offering with DVD released simultaneously in stores on April 7, 2009. Recorded live at The Cannon Center in Memphis, the 10-track project delivers both musically as well as visually. With this EMI Gospel release, Norful will once again display his talents as a prolific songwriter who can deliver relevant songs that speak grace, hope and truth to a public that is in need of these qualities during today's trying times. Produced by Norful and Jason Tyson, SMOKIE NORFUL LIVE is infused with an energy that only an enthusiastic sold out audience can bring. The audience's fervor can be heard throughout the CD and also viewed on an accompanying DVD. Lending their support to Norful on 'SMOKIE NORFUL LIVE' are guest performances by Tony Award® winning artist, Heather Headley and Stellar Award winner Tye Tribbett. The first single from SMOKIE NORFUL LIVE "Justified" impacts gospel radio on February 23, 2009.

One of the highlighted tracks featured on SMOKIE NORFUL LIVE is "Jesus Is Love." Norful teams up with Headley to re-record the gospel classic written and produced by Lionel Richie, showcasing the incredible vocal talents of both artists. "Jesus Is Love" is featured on both Norful and Headley's CDs. The song is garnering national attention from Gospel and Urban AC programmers alike. "My colleagues and I agree," says Alvin Stowe, Program Director of WQMZ-FM and WPZS-FM in Charlotte, NC; "this rendition of 'Jesus Is Love' is as good, if not better than the original."

She's a sweetheart. I love her spirit and her personality," comments Norful on working with the former Broadway star. "Since I've been in this industry, of all the people I've worked with, Heather was the first person to ever send me a personal, handwritten thank-you card."

SMOKIE NORFUL LIVE also showcases Norful's flair for writing songs that cover a wide range of themes-each one speaking to someone's need. Beginning with the opening proclamation, "God's Gonna Do It," featuring Tye Tribbett, to "Dear God," a personal letter from Norful to the Lord. The first single, "Justified," is a relevant and irresistible hit song that not only jump starts the project, but will make the listener stand up and shout.

"Where I thrive and flourish the most is in a live environment," comments Norful on why he decided to record a live album. "I'm really just a church kid. I have other components to add to the flavoring, but the bottom line is, I'm just a church kid who loves gospel music, loves God, and loves the Word of God. Where I have a natural tendency to excel is in a live setting. It's just a comfort zone that I've fallen into. I'm giving people some Sunday-morning material."

The recording offers listeners a glimpse of Norful's role as Senior Pastor of Victory Cathedral Worship Center─one of the fastest growing churches in the western suburban community of Bolingbrook/Romeoville, Illinois (outside Chicago) with an inner-city Chicago campus that is growing equally as fast. The multi-talented man of God is an ordained minister who started the church in the fall of 2005 and has seen a continuous increase in worshipers since its humble beginnings -- now amassing a membership of over 6,000 and still growing. Referring to the live recording Norful states, "If you catch me on Sunday morning, I sound just like this. I take great confidence in this because I encourage people that this is the best way: I don't have a Sunday-morning me and then a concert-night me. It's all the same person. I dress the same. I sing the same. I preach the same-the Word that you get in between songs is the same you get at church."

SMOKIE NORFUL LIVE is a "family affair" of sorts with many of the participants coming from Norful's church family. Several of the band musicians playing on the recording were from Norful's church; Jason Tyson, co-producer and musical director for the project also serves as Norful's musical director on the road and is the minister of music at the church. Tyson, considered a "little brother" and a friend by Norful, is additionally a business partner in their production company, One Wordd Productions. Tim Bailey, Assistant Pastor at Victory Cathedral Worship Center, also joined in on working on the project, co-writing some of the songs along with Norful. Singers Keisha McFarland, Denise Rutledge, Moiro Konchellah and Tiffany Gatlin are also key parts of the music ministry of Victory Cathedral Worship Center.

Norful will begin the New Year with a performance at the American Music Legends Inaugural Ball on January 20 in Washington, DC, followed by a debut performance of "Jesus Is Love" on BET's 9th Annual Celebration of Gospel, premiering on January 25 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. During the highly-anticipated gospel program, hosted by Steve Harvey, Norful is joined on stage by Headley for a dynamic rendition of "Jesus Is Love." Additional promotional activities will follow including performances on TBN, The Gospel Music Channel, a dedicated YouTube.com channel (to include audio and video teasers), online listening parties and streams, and a world premiere of the "Justified" video on Gospel City.

Smokie Norful-husband, father, pastor and recording artist-continues to solidify his place in today's continually changing gospel music landscape with the release of SMOKIE NORFUL LIVE. We all can learn a life lesson during today's challenging times from how Norful prophetically describes his own circumstance. "If I start to look at the condition of the circumstances-how busy I am and how much I have on my plate-that's when I will start to sink. But I don't look at it.
