"BlackBook" Gives Minorities Edge In Job Search and Biz Growth

In the world of social networking, Facebook and Twitter are tops. But in a slow economy where small businesses are struggling, professionals are losing their jobs and college students are faced with uncertainty, many minorities are realizing that these sites were never designed to help people find a job or grow a company. GoBlackbook.com or the "Blackbook" takes social media to the next level by designing a site that not only has the functionality of social networking, but adds a "Professional Information" section when creating a user profile and an exclusive "Classifieds" app that gives newspapers, magazines, radio stations, small business owners and entrepreneurs the ability to list their business, services, rates, jobs, etc. for thousands to view all over the world.

James Parker, Founder of the Chicago-based tech start-up is quick to point out that Blackbook is in no way comparing itself to Facebook. "We did not design Blackbook to be an alternative for minorities to other sites. But we did design the site to be used as a tool to truly network with each other, find and support minority and women-owned businesses, and potentially find employment." GoBlackbook.com is the first social networking site with a "classified app" and "section" that's free to use and search. "It's very easy to set up," says Valerie Battiest-Danzy, Soul Purpose entrepreneur, Chanel Ballard, Marketing Manager for H.A.S. Magazine, and Nicole Jones, owner of Sensual Steps Shoes. Each say they have already seen success by creating a business profile page and using the classified app to promote their businesses and services.

Professionals and college students can use the Professional Information" section when creating their profile to list their career objectives, skills, education, and more. Think LinkedIn, but not as complicated. "Most social networking sites only allow you to list your contact and personal information. We added this section so that a user's skills stand out on its own." And with Blackbook already in talks with Fortune 500 companies interested in using the site to find minority professionals and college graduates, Blackbook can soon be the number one site for employers to find the sharpest employees and job hunters looking for employment.

There is much excitement about GoBlackbook.org coming later this Fall. It will serve as the social conscience and awareness' arm of the site to provide scholarships for students interested in the field of technology and angel investments for minority and women-owned tech start-ups. "Our goal is to set aside 5% of Blackbook's revenue to help get more minorities in the tech industry. Now someone setting up a profile page on Blackbook can help send the next Mark Dean or Mae Jemison to school. So if you have a Facebook page, we'd love for you to have a Blackbook page too," Parker jokes. Keeping with his belief, African-American owned web development firm, Incite Graphics was recruited to create Blackbook.

SOUL LEGEND SOLOMON BURKE TO RELEASE 70TH BIRTHDAY MILESTONE ALBUM "NOTHING'S IMPOSSIBLE" (APRIL 6)

GRAMMY-winning, Rock & Roll Hall of Famer – SOLOMON BURKE, a true soul pioneer and a major architect of American music, debuts his much-anticipated 70th birthday release – NOTHING’S IMPOSSIBLE -- April 6 on E1 Music. It's a very special, yet bittersweet occasion, marking one of the final projects produced by Willie Mitchell, Burke’s musical soul brother and key collaborator , who passed away on January 5, 2010.

NOTHING’S IMPOSSIBLE was 35-years in the making, with "King" Burke finally arriving at Mitchell’s storied Royal Studio in Memphis, trademark Throne and all, for five weeks . Mitchell’s blueprint and spirit canvas these musical stories, in a partnership that stands proudly with the classics he produced with Al Green, Ann Peebles, and others for the immortal Hi Records imprint. Something spiritual and beyond a mere recording session has manifested.

Comments Burke: “If I could turn back the hands of time, I would freeze frame every second of it. It hurts so much to know I won’t get that chance again…You know when God’s in it, because everything works. No matter how hard you try for it not to work; it works. It was the last great shot (with Mitchell)…”

NOTHING’S IMPOSSIBLE is a musical conversation between two brothers, one minute teasing, the next sharing intimate war stories on the battlefield of love. Background vocals and Mitchell’s legendary orchestra subtly enhance and embellish twelve classic tracks of pure heart and soul.

The project’s title “Nothing’s Impossible,” was not only Mitchell’s intended CD title, but also Burke’s personal mantra. At nearly 70 years of age, he remains musically active and relevant, while continuing to resonate with a widening demographic, both nationally and internationally. To date, Burke has sold more than 17 million records. His soul standard “Everybody Needs Somebody To Love” has been covered by everyone from the Rolling Stones to Wilson Pickett to the Blues Brothers. His 2002 GRAMMY for “Best Contemporary Blues Album” (Don’t Give Up On Me) has introduced his genius to a whole new generation, while one of his best known hits “Cry To Me,” was used in the seduction scene of the major motion picture “Dirty Dancing.” His biggest fan, however, was the late Pope John Paul II, who invited Burke to perform at the Vatican’s Christmas celebration in 2000, that he organized with the present Pope Benedict XVI.

Burke first broke through in 1961 with a cover of the country standard “Just Out Of Reach Of My Two Empty Arms” that was a hit on the R&B and Pop charts. He released 32 singles on Atlantic over the next several years, producing six Top Ten R&B hits, four of which crossed over to the Top 40: “Just Out Of Reach (Of My Two Empty Arms),” “Cry To Me,” “Got To Get You Off Of My Mind,” “Everybody Needs Somebody To Love,” “You’re Good For Me,” “Tonight’s The Night” and “If You Need Me” (written by Wilson Pickett).

Burke has long been championed by his peers, music critics and celebrity fans. Ahmet Ertegun called him “probably the greatest soul singer” while Mick Jagger openly admitted trying to imitate the phrasing of Burke’s inimitable voice, and contemporaries such as Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty have performed his songs in concert. Now, with the release of the magnificent NOTHING'S IMPOSSIBLE, audiences can once again hear why they call Solomon Burke, the "King" of Rock & Soul.

G. Visuals delivers Grand Visuals for Dondria and Waka Flocka Flame Videos

This week, Greg “G. Visuals” Williams celebrated the world premiere of one of his latest projects, the music video, “You’re the One,” by So So Def’s Dondria. The anxiously anticipated video was premiered online via the website Global 14, which is a website owned by the So So Def’s Jermaine Dupri. Since its debut, on Monday afternoon, the video has gone viral with more than 20,000 views, reposts and mentions on websites, online magazines and blogs. The opportunity to shoot Dondria’s major label debut was an honor for G.Visuals, considering that the rising songstress’ had built her initial fan base from her own videos on her YouTube channel, which already had millions of views. “The song is crazy and that always helps when putting together a visual. Timing is everything and JD trusted a new director with his prized pupil. That’s why we ended up with a hot video,” states G.

This month was busy for the fledging production company, which also shot the remix video for Atlantic Records’ new artist, Waka Flocka Flame’s, “O Let’s Do It,” featuring Diddy, Rick Ross and Fabolous. This project reunited Waka with G., who also directed the original version which stayed on BET’s “106 and Park” countdown for over a month. “We got the call like 3 am on a Saturday morning and we shot on the following Monday. ‘We shoot Diddy on Monday’ is what my producer tells to me. It was game time. This is what you’re in it for, moments like this. Diddy wanted the vibe of the first video so he wanted to work with us,” reflects G.

This year got off to a quick start for G.Visuals, who celebrated the end of 2009 with a video landing on BET’s “Notarized” top 100 music video countdown. “Swag Surfin’” by F.L.Y. placed #30 on the annual end of the year countdown. The video for Waka Flocka’s “O Let's Do It” hit the number #1 spot twice on BET’s 106and Park. Raekwon the Chef “Only Built for Cuban Links II” gave hip-hop a classic album and G. Visuals’ collaboration provided classic imagery. “Working on the Rae (Raekwon) project is something I’m very proud of. The Chef said he saw things in me that he saw in Hype and Chris Robinson when he worked with them early in their career,” recalls G.

To date, G.Visuals and the 60 Frames production team have shot music videos for Raekwon, Ludacris, Mike Epps, The Dream, Big Bank Black, Playaz Circle, Lil Scrappy, Bobby Valentino, Gorilla Zoe, Case, Ms. Brown, Huey, in addition to Dondria, Waka Flocka Flame and many more artists. With his first proper full length album since 2006, Dres of the legendary Queens outfit Black Sheep is gearing up to once again command the airwaves with the April 6th release of his highly anticipated album, From The Black Pool Of Genius. In an effort to holdover his insatiable fans while finishing up the LP, Dres released the five song EP, From The Black Pool Of Genius: The Prelude to much fanfare in December. The EP served as a promising precursor of what fans can expect from the upcoming album, and since its release Dres has been hard at work in the lab perfecting his sound.

Unlike The Prelude, The From The Black Pool Of Genius LP finds Dres enlisting a handful of his hip-hop brethren to elevate the album to the next level. "I would say the major difference [between The Prelude and LP] is the entourage of songs on the LP come with many guests which brings a nice variety to the spices already being served" says Dres. Production duties are handled by Paten Locke, Tough Junkie, BeanOne, ShowBiz, the Beatnuts, and Urban Soul Group, producers of "Forever LuvLee," the only hold over track from the EP, all of who manage to season some new flavor onto the songs while keeping right in tune with Dres' signature sound. The album also boasts performances from lyrical heavyweights AZ, Rhymefest, and Jean Grae, who are all on hand to drop notable guest verses and showcase their verbal dexterity, as well as an appearance from P&V, who provide an R&B touch for the project. A rare Native Tongue's bonus track featuring Q-Tip of A Tribe Called Quest, Dave of De La Soul and Mike G of the Jungle Brothers rounds out Dres' sonic serving of genius.

As one of the most respected and insightful voices in music today, Dres is using the album as means of communicating his beliefs about the meaning of hip-hop. "I once heard a poet say that 'hip hop backward is 'pih poh (people)'- the way I see it, many artists are a lot more hip-hop than they ever realized." As for the album title, Dres explains that, "Black Pool doesn’t refer to black people. It refers to the color black's unique ability to absorb light. This deep, vast pool of soul, of artistic insight; although it's not always understood, the light it reflects back to the 'pih-poh' is necessary." Hip-hop heads are ready and anxiously awaiting to see the light. Dres' From The Black Pool of Genius full length will be available April 6th.

Also, be sure to catch Dres in action as he hits the stage with Serius Jones, Shinobi Ninja and Peter Hadar at Mexicali Live tonight, February 18 at 7:30PM. Located at 1409 Queen Anne Road in Teaneck, NJ, the venue promises to deliver an electrifying genre-spanning night of sounds from the worlds of hip-hop, punk rock and electronica.

Check out, "I Wanna Rock," the first of Dres' Hot Track Of The Week series, which will feature Dres spitting a 16 over current instrumentals: http://media.audibletreats.com/Dres-I_Wanna_Rock_Freestyle.mp3

Also, check out an excerpt from the upcoming Speaking In Tongues documentary. The segment features Dres at work in the studio with Mike G of the Jungle Brothers as they work on the forthcoming, and highly anticipated Native Tongues reunion track: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZjD9-UIF_0

The Background:

It all began with a thundering baseline and an unmistakably classic phrase - "this or that." One of the most widely recognized songs in rap music history, the 1991 classic "The Choice is Yours" was hailed by VH1 in 2008 as one of the best rap songs of all time. The highly respected Queens emcee Dres, along with DJing partner-in-crime William "Mista Lawnge" McLean took the music industry by storm in the early 1990's as part of the groundbreaking collective Native Tongues. Penning such Billboard standouts as "Flavor of the Month" and "Strobelight Honey" for the duo's platinum-selling debut album A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing in 1992, Dres would continue to crank out the hits on the group's second release, Non Fiction. After a brief reunion with Mister Lawnge in 2000, Dres again set his sights on recording. He released the innovative online-only album 8WM/Novakane in 2007. Now he's back in the studio, writing the next chapter of his storied career. Dres' highly anticipated new project, From the Black Pool of Genius, out Spring 2010, promises to pair thought-provoking lyrics with astounding beats constructed by a corps of new and established beatmakers. They include Bean One, Showbiz, Tough Junkie, P. Locke, Urban Soul Music Group, and Willie Evans. He's also got an impressive line-up of guest stars, including De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Rhymefest, AZ, and Tough Junkie, among others. Leading up to the release of his next full-length, Black Sheep have released a precursor EP, From The Black Pool Of Genius: The Prelude, available now. From The Black Pool Of Genius will be available on April 6th.

Sadat X feat. Pete Rock - "Turn It Up"

Haitians Still Suffering 8 Weeks After Deadly Quake

Eight weeks after the catastrophic earthquake that killed more than 230,000 people in Haiti, the Pan American Development Foundation and its partners renewed their call for financial support so they can help Haitians rebuild their homes and take care of their families.

"March 12 marks the eight-week anniversary of the quake. More than a million Haitians are homeless and urgently need our help," says Jimmy Jean-Louis, the actor and spokesperson for PADF's disaster relief and recovery efforts. "Please call toll free (877) 572-4484 to contribute to the relief and recovery efforts."

Jimmy Jean-Louis, who plays the "Haitian" on NBC's hit series "Heroes," is returning to his homeland on March 12 to participate in recovery efforts. It's his second trip since the devastating 7.0 quake. Immediately after Jan. 12, he spent a week in Haiti distributing relief supplies and assisting families.

To date, more than 300,000 people received food, water, shelter, medicine and other supplies from PADF and its partners thanks to individual, corporate and multilateral donations.

Although providing relief will continue for a few months, PADF and its partners Hollywood Unites for Haiti (HUFH) and the Organization of American States (OAS) have initiated recovery and reconstruction in key areas of Port-au-Prince. With additional funding, it would like to expand to the Southeast province.

Among key activities that PADF-OAS-HUFH are undertaking in Haiti:

* Employment: Working with its network of community groups, 3,000 people are clearing rubble and cleaning streets in the capital. Haitians to earn money to support their families and help to rid the city of the debris that chokes a number of streets. It would like to expand the program to the communities in the Southeast province.

* Supplies: PADF continues to distribute relief as the crisis continues.

* House "tagging" & repair: Teams of structural engineers are being deployed to evaluate homes to determine if they are safe, need repair or should be demolished. Twenty thousand homes will be evaluated during three weeks. U.S. structural engineer and earthquake expert Kit Miyamoto and his team are training Haitian engineers to conduct the field work. For homes that need repair, PADF will provide guidelines and materials to make them safe.

"The goal is to move 70,000 people from these temporary camps into safe homes before the rainy season," says John Sanbrailo, PADF's executive director.

Individual and corporate donations to PADF-OAS-HUFH's Haiti relief, recovery and reconstruction efforts are encouraged by calling toll-free in the U.S. (877) 572-4484 or visiting www.PanAmericanRelief.org. Text HEAL to 50555 in the U.S. to donate $5.

METHOD MAN, GHOSTFACE KILLAH & RAEKWON BRING SPIRIT OF WU-TANG TO 'WU MASSACRE,' IN STORES MARCH 30th ON DEF JAM

Cosmic forces of destiny unite three mortals in world-shaking times, as Def Jam recording artists – and Wu-Tang Clan brothers-for-life – Method Man, Ghostface Killah and Raekwon join forces on WU MASSACRE, an historic collaboration that takes Wu science and theology to the next step on hip-hop’s evolutionary grid. (Tentative tracklist, song titles and guest artists appear below, subject to change.)

WU MASSACRE, which arrives March 30th in the physical and digital marketplace, will be preceded by the soulful street single “Our Dreams,” starring the legendary Wu-Tang Clan’s three most dynamic MCs, Meth, Ghost, and Rae and produced by RZA for Wu-Tang Productions. For an added tug on the heart-strings, “Our Dreams” samples Michael Jackson’s mid-’70s hit as a 17-year old, “We’re Almost There.”

In addition to “Our Dreams,” Meth, Ghost and Rae take the trio spotlight on two more tracks: the thunderous opener “Criminology 2.5” and “Miranda.” Ghost and Meth take the lead on “It’s That Wu Sh*t.” On the “Smooth Sailing” Remix, Ghost and Meth are joined by Solomon Childs and Streetlife. On “Gunshowers,” Meth and Ghost are joined by fellow WTC rapper Inspectah Deck and Sun God. “Youngstown Heist” features Trife, Sheek and Bully.

In addition to RZA, WU MASSACRE features a number of guest producers, starting with Mathematics on “Mef vs. Chef,” “Dangerous,” “Miranda,” and “Made Men.” Scram Jones produced “Youngstown Heist” and “It’s That Wu Sh*t.” E Meal produced “Pimpin’ Chipp.” And Ty Fyffe produced the “Smooth Sailing” Remix.

The springtime arrival of WU MASSACRE follows a busy year of album releases and performance schedules by all three artists:

Ghostface Killah returned as The Wizard Of Poetry (released September 2009), his 6th Def Jam album (and 10th major label album). The Wiz focused on duets with an A-list of guests including Raheem DeVaughn (on the first single, “Baby”), Mary J. Blige, John Legend, Fabolous, Lloyd, Vaughn Anthony & Estelle, and others. Ghost spent July and August with Method Man and Redman, keeping the Wu-Tang Clan spirit alive and well on the month-long, 21-city Foot Print in Hip-Hop Tour.

Raekwon aka The Chef gave WU fans something to believe with the long-awaited Only Built 4 Cuban Linx II (also released September 2009), which spun off a pair of all-star singles: “New Wu” featuring Meth and Ghost, produced by RZA; and “House of Flying Daggers” featuring Meth, Ghost, GZA, and Inspectah Deck, produced by J. Dilla. CLII is the sequel to Rae’s groundbreaking solo debut of 1995, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, one of the very first solo albums released by a W-TC member after the group’s 36 Chambers entry back in ’93. Rae spent the summer 2009 on the massively successful Rock The Bells Tour alongside GZA, RZA, Nas, Damian Marley, the Roots, Ice Cube, Common, and others.

Always larger than life, Method Man is still basking in the glow of Blackout! 2 (released May 2009), his critic¬ally acclaimed collaboration with Redman. It was the long-awaited sequel (ten years!) to Meth and Red’s RIAA platinum Blackout, a defining hip-hop event of 1999 (with “Tear It Off,” “Y.O.U.,” and “Da Rockwilder”). Blackout! 2 blasted off with a trifecta of new single releases showing off Meth and Red at their very best: “A-Yo” featuring Saukrates, produced by Pete Rock; “Mrs. International” featuring Erick Sermon, produced by Buckwild; and “City Lights” featuring Bun B, produced by Nasty Kutt.

WU MASSACRE (tentative track listing):
1. “Criminology 2.5” featuring Raekwon, Ghostface Killah and Method Man.
2. “Mef vs. Chef” featuring Rhythm Roots Allstars, produced by Allah Mathematics.
3. “Ya Moms” skit featuring Method Man and Raekwon.
4. “Smooth Sailing” Remix featuring Ghostface Killah, Method Man, Solomon Childs and Streetlife, produced by Ty Fyffe.

School Principal Motivates Black Males In New Book

RENOWNED PRINCIPAL WRITES BOOK FOR MOTIVATING BLACK MALES TO ACHIEVE IN SCHOOL AND IN LIFE

Bookcover

Newark, NJ (Black News.com) - As the achievement gap continues to pose one of the greatest challenges to educators at all levels, the plight of the Black male learner poses an even greater challenge as evidenced by national achievement, dropout and suspension data. Motivating Black Males to Achieve in School and in Life will provide educators with proven strategies toward motivating their Black male learners at all grade levels to take a greater interest in school, learning and preparing for academic excellence.

Recipient of the 2009 Milken National Educator Award, Newark, NJ based educator, Principal Baruti Kafele draws from his 20 years of experience in teaching Black males and turning around troubled urban schools to explain:

* Why the challenges of educating Black male students are frequently different from educating other student populations.
* What all Black male students need in their classroom experiences.
* How to assess your own attitudes and abilities to educate Black males.
* Which major problems outside of school could change the way you teach Black males.
* How to address the root causes of Black male self-identity.
* Why and how to develop a young men's empowerment program.

Noted educator/author, Dr. Douglas Reaves states in his book review:

"In this clarion call for personal responsibility for students, teachers, and families, Kafele offers practical advice and a demanding set of standards. He balances an emphasis on self-esteem with self-discipline, knowing that the former will not be meaningful without the latter. The appendices provide practical lists for students, aspiring leaders, and teachers. His work is consistent with the outstanding work of Carol Dweck of Stanford and Jeff Howard of the Efficacy Institute. Kafele's personal story and his extensive experience demonstrate that urban students in general and African-American males in particular benefit not from well-intentioned sympathy, but from rigor, high expectations, intensive literacy support, and pride in who they are and who they will become."

Motivating Black Males to Achieve in School and in Life will help educators to understand why lack of proficiency in reading, writing, and math among Black males is a symptom of deeper problems that are generally ignored. It will provide educators with solutions that can be put into their daily practice right away to improve the performance of their Black male students.

First Black-Owned Cigar Manufacturer Launches New Cigar

DON ABRAM HARRIS CIGARS, THE FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN CIGAR MANUFACTURER IN THE U.S., LAUNCHES NEW CIGAR

-- The Company Is Planning A Nationwide Tour --

Don Abram Harris

Washington, DC (BlackNews.com) -- There is a saying that "great aspirations begin with great ideas", which holds true for Don Abram Harris - the first African American Cigar Manufacturer in the United States. Born in the state of Maryland, Mr. Harris is an entrepreneur at heart who says he has always loved a great smoking cigar and wanted to create his own. He succeeded by introducing the Don Abram Harris Cigar line at the 76th Annual International Premium Cigar and Pipe Retailers Association (IPCPR) Trade Show in Las Vegas, NV, July 13-18, 2008 where they made their first impression on thousands of retailers and cigar enthusiasts of the world. All who sampled the cigars gave nothing but good reviews.

While in Puerto Rico, Don Abram met with one of Puerto Rico's seasoned cigar veterans who had been in the cigar manufacturing business since the age of 7 years old. At the age of 18, he became production manager of his father's company and eventually took over the business from his dad who had inherited the business from his father. We're talking generations of experts in the industry! A friendship began and after working with experts in the field to create the various blends, great effort was put into creating the brands exclusively blended for the Don Abram Harris Cigar line.

The Don Abram Harris Cigars come in some of the most recognizable brands born from Puerto Rico's tropical soil including the Churchill, the Maduro, the Robusto, the Torpedo & the island's favorite, the Corona (crown) - each with its own distinct aroma and flavorful taste. These premium cigars are sold by the box and every hand-packed box contains 25 first quality premium cigars made with fresh raw materials and aged tobacco. The blend of fillers, binders and wrappers determine cigar flavor which in the cigar world is considered a fine art. These cigars can definitely be considered premium cigars and can hold their own next to any of the other high quality cigars. The 15 year old, aged tobacco boasts of refined and mellow tastes that are well worth the smoke.

The CHURCHILL: The length is 7 inches by 48-ring gauge. (Named after Winston's trademark). Handmade with aged tobacco from the exclusive Utuado region of Puerto Rico with long fillers and binders from Brazil; they are draped by a natural Maduro, sun-grown seed wrapper from Africa. The ROBUSTO: This medium to full-bodied cigar finishes with waves of baking spices while capturing the breezes of cocoa and roasted nuts. Its length is 5 inches by a 50-ring gauge.

The TORPEDO: An excellent choice, properly aged and matured, this full-bodied cigar has a stronger more robust blend. Made with a dark oily maduro wrapper that will satisfy even the most demanding palate. Covered with an oily Connecticut Broadleaf maduro wrapper, this cigar is full of hearty earthy flavors, combined with a mix of the finest Dominican fillers resulting in a fine quality cigar.

The CORONA: Made with a golden brown, Connecticut shade wrapper, this exclusive cigar is blended with a robust combination of aged Dominican filler and a sun ripened broadleaf maduro wrapper. It's packed with complex flavors yet medium in strength. It's length is 6 inches by 42-ring gauge. The open foot (the end you light) & closed head (the end smoked) is normally the tobacco wrapper leaves are state of the art craftsmanship. No matter your choice, the Don Abram Harris line of cigars are an excellent choice for both beginner cigar smokers and seasoned smokers who like to enjoy an occasional mild to medium flavored cigar.

Don Abram Harris Cigars are handmade with the best island seeds found only in Puerto Rico's Utuado mountains by one of the most respected Puerto Rican born cigar makers. Don Abram will be starting his tour across the U.S. to start getting his product into the stores.
