AFRICAN-AMERICAN MEN AND WOMEN NEED TO HAVE THE CONVERSATION: HOW BLACK MEN AND WOMEN CAN BUILD TRUSTING RELATIONSHIPS BY HILL HARPER

"Simply put, black women and black men are not communicating. And perhaps the saddest part of our lack of communication is that in many ways we are not even friends anymore." --- Hill Harper, THE CONVERSATION

New York, NY (BlackNews.com) - In his first book for adults, the NAACP award-winning, New York Times Bestselling Hill Harper sparks honest dialogues about the crisis in African American relationships.

Only 34% of African-American children today are raised in two-parent households. That is down from 1966, when 85% of black children were raised by two parents. Harper brings a variety of issues out of the shadows in THE CONVERSATION: How Black Men and Women Can Build Trusting Relationships (Gotham Books, September 8, 2009; $22.50)

Harper speaks to women and men with a clear-eyed perspective, covering such topics as:

* The roots of the breakdown in the black family
* Bridging the communication gap
* The difference between sex and intimacy

Harper also discusses gender specific issues such as:

* What men can do to break the cycle of being a "player"
* The myth that there are no mature, single, black male professionals
* What women can do to alleviate the "heaviness" they sometimes attach to dating
* Self-worth and net worth, and why you should never settle for an unworthy partner.

Collecting stories from couples in all stages of relationships -- from throes of new love to 50-year long marriages, Harper dissects what goes wrong, and what can go right, in the relationships African Americans are having today.

African American men and women: it's time to have THE CONVERSATION.
