Heralding Newark's Open Doors Art Festival, The Barat Foundation and the Newark Arts Council will host the 2nd Annual Newark Arts Parade on Friday, October 23, 2009 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The parade is a celebration of the arts in Newark and The Barat Foundation's mission of "promoting art in the public sphere through community collaboration." The parade will feature over thirty giant modular design lightweight sculptures called "Animodules" and LIVE music provided by the Malcolm X Shabazz High School Marching Band. Expect special guest performances including gravity-defying Parkour athletes and Brazilian Caporeria dancers. The Newark Arts Parade will light up the heart of Downtown Newark, beginning at 765 Broad Street, continuing to Military Park and the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, and ending on Broad and Market Streets. The public is invited to join in the festivities.
The Barat Foundation (entrance on Bank Street) at 765 Broad Street will be transformed into a perpetual workshop where hundreds of students, arts organizations, volunteers, and sponsors will work on the giant Animodules, preparing for the parade. Terry Brewin, teacher at Newark Vocational High School and the creator of the Animodules, began the tradition with The Barat Foundation in 2008. These giant Animodules have become a popular mainstay in exhibits around Downtown Newark and are on permanent display at the Foundation.
Immediately following the Parade, The Barat Foundation will host a Gallery Opening for "Art as a Portal" - with exhibitions in all five of their gallery spaces. Relics From [the] Other Realms - an exciting multimedia group art show will feature internationally celebrated artists, including Ryan Trecartin, Tim White Sobieski, Justin Samson, and Taylor McKimens. Works of local artists, including Mansa K. Mussa, Gary Barat, and the art collective Guerilla Galleries will also be on display. Expect live music and exciting performances during the gallery opening.
