With Black Eyed Peas' "I Gotta Feeling" at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the trade magazine's latest issue, Interscope Records notched 23 consecutive weeks at the top spot, breaking a record held since 1978. With the new issue (September 12), Interscope Records continues to set a new record by remaining at #1 for now 24 straight weeks.
Interscope surpassed the previous label record of 21 consecutive weeks held by RSO Records, which began at the end of 1977 and included singles from the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack album (Bee Gees with "How Deep Is Your Love," "Stayin' Alive" and "Night Fever" plus Yvonne Elliman's "If I Can't Have You"), "Baby Come Back" by Player and "(Love Is) Thicker Than Water" from Andy Gibb.
The new streak is thanks to Lady GaGa's "Pokerface" which hit #1 for one week followed by two Black Eyed Peas' songs--"Boom Boom Pow" which ranked #1 for 12 weeks and now "I Gotta Feeling" for 10 weeks, both from the group's album The E.N.D. In April, "Boom Boom Pow" became the three-time Grammy winning, multiplatinum-selling Peas' first song to reach #1. The 12-week mark also tied the record held by "Lose Yourself" from Eminem (another Interscope artist) as the longest running Rap/Hip-hop song atop the Hot 100 chart.
"Having talented artists with giant hits always helps, and Lady Gaga and The Peas make it look easy...that plus the exceptional dedication of our hard working promotion staff helped to make this historic accomplishment for our label possible," said Brenda Romano, President, Promotion, Interscope Geffen A&M Records.
Meanwhile "I Gotta Feeling" debuted at #2 (the group's highest chart debut) and gave the Peas' the distinction of being one of only 11 artists who have held the #1 and #2 spots simultaneously. When "I Gotta Feeling" took over the top spot in July, the Peas became only the fourth group in the chart's history to replace itself at #1, following The Beatles, Boyz II Men, and OutKast. Along the way, the Peas have broken the consecutive weeks at #1 records held by Boyz II Men for a duo or group and by Usher for any artist.
