It’s not every day a musical genius is born. On July 14, 2009, KRIZZ KALIKO will release his second solo CD, GENIUS. Zakiya Hooker "Keeps It Real" in North and South America with New CD Release
When a woman sings the blues it is the most natural rhythm on the planet. Who else to better to know and express the anguish of love and pain or the rollercoaster ride of joy and despair than a woman who has the full experience of marriage, the intimate knowledge of motherhood and the intuitive gift of survival at her fingertips.
Zakiya Hooker brings all this to the table and more with the June 16 release of her fourth CD "Keeping It Real," produced by her husband, Ollan Bell, on their independent label, Boogie with the Hook Records distributed by BDC Distribution. As the daughter of the late, great blues icon, John Lee Hooker, who better to keep it real than Zakiya? The blues sangin' songtress literally has the music flowin' through her veins.
"Keeping It Real" is a jazzy, sassy, soulful serenade of thirteen tracks that span the spectrum of the landscape of the blues. Produced and recorded mostly in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Ollan spent the last five years there gathering the finest musicians to record music and vocals before coming back to their home studio, John Lee Hooker's Boom Boom Studio, where Zakiya laid her final vocals. The results are an expansive project that find her not only performing a duet with her dad, but also covering a few classics and ultimately, singing the blues in Spanish!
"Keeping It Real" does just that with the opening track "Hug U Kiss U," an upbeat, uptempo, bass heavy cover of a John Lee Hooker original. On "Cold, Cold Feeling" penned by Zakiya with her husband Bell, she slows the pace way down with a blues notion of love lost and gone astray. With "Desconfio" Zakiya proves that she is not new to the blues, but indeed true to the blues, offering her own Spanish language rendition of the Latin American classic.
The vocals of the late John Lee Hooker himself provide the lead segue for the haunting "End of the World Blues," on track six. While covering one of her dad's most famous tunes, "One Bourbon One Scotch One Beer" Zakiya rocks with the assuredness of one who knows her roots and knows them well! She takes us "Over the Top" with a purity of tone that simply cradles the heart with emotion on track eleven. Then Zakiya all but shuts it down on the last track when she joins her late dad for a duet on "Rock These Blues Away."
The Detroit native made her debut performance in 1991 with her dad in Oakland, CA. She has since gone on to perform and record internationally, establishing her own voice in a genre dominated by men. A loyal advocate of the blues, Zakiya is committed to preserving the legacy that nourished her. In addition to touring internationally, she is a spoken word performer advocating the original American art form.

With the indie success of her debut EP, “Go Hard or Go Home,” in the review mirror Underground Music Award-winning R&B singer Lafonda is raising the bar with the release of her second independent EP titled “Don’t Need a Cosign” on August 18.
The Bronx Bombshell showcases the maturity of her melodic voice and choreographed dances behind beats of producers like Plaboy-Chi and Drawzilla. Lafonda’s first single also titled “Don’t Need a Cosign” is produced by Chi and highlights the dual-concept that people, and artists, don't need validation from others in their day-to-day lives to be comfortable with whom they are and what they do in life.
“I wanted to put together a well-rounded EP that spoke to the pressures placed on everyday people to be ‘this or to be that,’ whether it’s in their professional lives or personal lives, and the insecurities that manifest themselves as a result of those pressures,” says Lafonda. “Ultimately you know your worth and don’t need validation from those not living the consequences of your decisions.”
The depth of the EP is also displayed on songs like the ballad “One Question” which showcase the songstress’ increased vocal range and the female anthem “Ain’t No Competition” where Lafonda’s dusts her shoulders off and demonstrates her moxie.
Lafonda is a winner of the 2006 Underground Music Award’s “Best R&B Female Artist.” Last year, she also won three Underground Indie Awards for “Best Female Solo,” “Best Female Performer,” and “Best R&B Female Artist.” The heralded singer has also appeared on BET’s 106 & Park, MSG TV, MTV3 and countless of print and online publications.

July 15 and 17 Grammy Nominated Reggae Icon Beres Hammond performs in Brooklyn
Raising the bar to a higher level, Jamaican musical legend and Grammy nominated singer Beres Hammond performed to sold-out venues less than a year ago. From July 1 to August 30th, he will make his second trek across the United States and Canada for his highly anticipated encore tour. This tour will further elevate his status as the pre-eminent figure in reggae today. Fans can look forward to hearing his timeless classics as well as current hits from his VP Records album A Moment In Time released late last year.
Known to many as the originator of “Lover’s Rock” or the “Otis Redding of Reggae,” Beres Hammond has been writing, producing and pouring out his smoky-sweet voice over every kind of riddim track for over three decades. During the ‘90s, Beres blazed a trail of modern classics for a variety of producers, from the strugglers' anthem “Putting Up Resistance” (Tappa) to lovers' laments like “Come Back Home” (Star Trail). In 2001, Beres brought us major hits like “They Gonna Talk” and “Rock Away” from his Grammy nominated album Music is Life. VP Records then released The Ultimate Collection: Can’t Stop A Man in 2003 to commemorate Hammond’s career, and his 2004 album Love Has No Boundaries, which featured his familiar romantic ballads and mid-tempo dancehall grooves.

New York stand up! Staten Island put one fist in the air! On Tuesday, June 30th, 2009 E1 Music is set to release CHAMBER MUSIC, a brand new project from the Wu-Tang which pairs original Clan MCs with classics ‘90s rap veterans.
The project is Executive Produced by RZA.
CHAMBER MUSIC features: Ghostface Killah, Raekwon, RZA, U-God and Inspectah Deck, plus affiliate Killah Priest, alongside classic hip hop MCs such as AZ, Havoc (Mobb Deep), Cormega, Kool G Rap, Masta Ace, Sadat X (Brand Nubian) and Sean Price (Heltah Skeltah).
The return-to-form sound of CHAMBER MUSIC is the album hardcore Wu-Tang fans have waited years for.
CHAMBER MUSIC’s throw-back sound is inspired by classic soul and kung fu imagery. It features a combination of new beats and live instrumentation by Brooklyn soul band The Revelations (all supervised by RZA) shaped in a classic vibe, reminiscent of the group’s 36 Chambers album but with a completely updated, modern twist.
Wu Tang supreme architect RZA weighs in, “This album has a very live element of today’s musicians playing the vibe of Wu-Tang, know what I mean? The vibe we would normally sample, the vibe of things that we would accumulate through old soul songs, jazz songs, kung fu movies whatever, now you’ve got musicians that can play this vibe with Wu-Tang MC’s rapping over it. The goal of this album is definitely paying homage to our early sound. In the old days, we had to sample and find snares and things like that or chord changes just to make a beat. Now, this is being done it with a band. A lot of times, you hear rappers over a live band and that loses the hip-hop because a lot of those bands from the old days wasn’t from the hip-hop generation. On this album, we make it sound like it was in the 36 Chambers era. To me, what also adds to this album, you’ve got the Wu-Tang MCs but you also got your other favorite MCs from that era like Havoc, Cormega and others. This album can be played with a live band and it will sound BIG.”

Robertson to Make Children's Book Debut
Best-selling author Gil Robertson has signed with Just Us Books – the premiere publisher of Black-interest books for children – to release his debut children’s book, 21st Century African American Political Leaders. Slated for a February 2010 release, the book series will provide children ages 9 – 14, with inspirational biographical sketches on the lives of 24 contemporary African American political leaders.
A respected, veteran A&E journalist, Robertson is the editor of the best-selling 2006 anthology, Not in My Family: AIDS in the African American Community, which was nominated for both a NAACP Image Award and an African American Literary Award in the “Best Non-Fiction” category. His most recent book, Family Affair: What it Means to be African American Today, was released to stellar reviews including a “Pick of the Week” selection from renowned Publisher’s Weekly.
I think that 21st Century African Americans in Politics will fill a void in modern day children books by introducing young people to political leaders, who like President Obama are making new strides in American politics,” says Carolyn L. Garnes, a member of the Black Caucus of the American Library Association and former Chair Coretta Scott Book Award Committee. “There is simply not enough information on the accomplishments and achievement of African Americans in politics, so this project will be a very valuable resource to students and adults.”
From Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick to Newark, NJ Mayor Corey Booker, the series will spotlight the histories of each politician as they make strides in the social and governmental fabric of America. 21st Century African American Political Leaders will cover the early lives and professional accomplishments of these leaders who represent the new vanguard in American politics. R&B newcomer Josh X-an-tus is wowing audiences across the nation with his new single, “First Time,” from his highly anticipated debut album, Can I Live. The classically trained pianist already has a major buzz about him thanks to his single, “Let’s Ride,” with rapper Jadakiss. The hood love anthem was featured as one of the top ten favorite videos on MTV. X-an-tus is now slowing it down with a beautiful ballad about the blossoming of young love and making love for the first time, which will prove he has the talent to keep the hit song momentum going. He has even been traveling across the country performing it live for radio program directors and their listening audience, demonstrating that real artists and musicians still exist. X-an-tus is sure most people will be able to relate to, “First Time.”
“The song is about all those wonderful emotions you feel when you’re with someone special, and it’s your very first time. As people get older, they forget what that felt like and begin to take the experience for granted. I wanted to create a song that gives them a reason to remember,” says X-an-tus. X-an-tus recently shot the video for “First Time” In Los Angeles under the direction of Juwan Lee. “The song is about all those wonderful emotions you feel when you’re with someone special, and it’s your very first time. As people get older, they forget what that felt like and begin to take the experience for granted. I wanted to create a song that gives them a reason to remember,” says X-an-tus. X-an-tus recently shot the video for “First Time” In Los Angeles under the direction of Juwan Lee. He also wrote, composed and produced many of the other songs on Can I Live, which chronicles his life.

SOONER OR LATER, is the first release to come out on Lyfe's new label Jesus Swings. He notes: "I am happy to be working with Asylum/Warner Bros. to introduce Jesus Swings. It's a new found independence for me and it's rewarding to get to call the shots. It takes a real man to accept living and dying by his thoughts, and rising and falling by his dreams."
LYFE JENNINGS, a native of Toledo, Ohio, transformed the music world in 2004 after the release of his critically acclaimed debut Lyfe 268-192. Hailed as gritty and raw, the album created devoted fans everywhere and sold over a million copies.
LYFE captured an even broader audience in 2006 with his sophomore effort, The Phoenix, which expanded on his life story, taking listeners through different phases of a man. The album featured the smash hit, "S-E-X," a cautionary tale for young women from a male perspective. He went on to release Lyfe Changes in 2008.
